Plein Air
En plein air is a French term meaning "in the open air" and refers to the practice of painting outdoors rather than in a studio. By working directly from nature, artists capture the changing effects of natural light, colour, atmosphere, and weather as they happen. This approach encourages spontaneity, expressive brushwork, and a fresh, immediate response to the landscape.
Popularised by the Impressionists in the 19th century, plein air painting continues to be valued for its ability to convey the mood and character of a place. Whether depicting rolling countryside, bustling city streets, or coastal scenes, the focus is on observing and interpreting the environment in real time, creating artworks that reflect both the beauty of nature and the artist's personal experience of it.
Originals are painted 100% on location and only finished off with a varnish once fully dried at the art studio.
