The original paining was done on location (Plein Air) on the Trent and Mersey Canal that is not far from Armitage Shanks. Many of the local go for a walk as it is very peaceful down there when the trains aren't going past. Wakers are greeted by birds especially Robins and ducks.
Key details:
- Main subject: Bridge 60 spans the Trent and Mersey canal at the center of the composition.
- It is in an impressionistic style with vivid, saturated greens and warm earth tones.
- Setting: The bridge is surrounded by dense, lush trees and foliage, creating the feeling of a peaceful woodland either side.
- Water: The calm water beneath the bridge reflects the bright green leaves, adding a strong sense of depth and tranquility.
- Pathway: A towpath runs along the left side of the water, with a simple dark set of steps running up to meet the bridge
- Lighting: Bright sunlight filters through the canopy, illuminating the leaves and creating high-contrast patches of light and shadow. The glowing greens suggest a sunny spring or summer day.
- Painting style: Expressive, visible brushstrokes rather than fine detail. The colors are vibrant and layered, emphasizing mood over realism.
- Composition: The arch of the bridge acts as a natural focal point, drawing the eye toward the opening and the continuation of the stream beyond.
- Presentation: The artwork is displayed with a wide white mat against a plain white background. A small artist's signature appears in the corner of the painting.
Overall, the piece conveys a serene, inviting landscape, with the bright foliage and reflective water creating a peaceful, almost idyllic atmosphere.
